Background
Regular participation in physical activity throughout life can improve health and reduce the risk of developing several chronic diseases. However, a significant number of Danish children and adolescents do not meet national recommendations. In recent years, the concept of "physical literacy" has gained popularity worldwide and has been recognized as a proximal measure for lifelong engagement in physical activity. In Denmark, the development of theoretically driven and evidence-based interventions focusing on physical literacy has not yet begun. A promising and internationally tested intervention, Youth Physical Activity Towards Health (Y-PATH), is based on the theory of physical literacy and has been shown to be effective in promoting children's physical activity levels, well-being, and motor skills.
Objective
3PL is a pilot study aimed at testing the feasibility and acceptability of a previously developed and tested intervention focusing on physical literacy.
Method
3PL will test the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted version of the Y-PATH intervention in a Danish context among students (aged 9-11) in two public schools. This will provide a solid empirical and theoretical basis for a future scaled-up effectiveness study. The project is supported by researchers from the School of Education at University College Cork in Ireland, the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University in Ireland, Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research in Canada, the Department of Public Health at Aarhus University, Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations (DGI), and the associations for Danish School Sports.
Timeline
The project will run from April 2023 to August 2026.
