Background
Early childhood is a crucial period for children's development – especially for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorders and ADHD). In Denmark, nature-based pedagogy is widely integrated in ECEC to support children's holistic development. Despite this, there is a lack of systematic knowledge on how outdoor pedagogical practices can best be adapted to support children with special needs in special ECEC settings.
Research indicates that outdoor play and learning can promote children's motor skills, increase physical activity, stimulate mental and social skills through play and interaction, and foster new friendships. Therefore, knowledge is needed to equip practitioners with the tools to create inclusive outdoor spaces that support all children's development and well-being.
Aim
The aim of the research project Outdoor Play for All is to map existing outdoor pedagogical practices in Danish special needs ECEC settings and develop practice-oriented guidelines to strengthen outdoor pedagogy for children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
Methods
The project will be carried out in close collaboration with practitioners, parents, and experts in outdoor pedagogy. It is divided into three sub-studies:
1. Mapping existing practice
A nationwide survey will identify current outdoor activities, benefits, and barriers in special needs ECEC institutions.
2. Development of guidelines
The guidelines will be developed through a co-creation process with practitioners, parents, and experts to ensure that they are relevant, practical, and adaptable to different institutional contexts.
3. Dissemination of results
Results and guidelines will be shared through national seminars, webinars, case videos, and an online platform, so that knowledge and inspiration can reach the wider practice field.
The project is carried out in collaboration between VIA University College, Children & Nature – Denmark, and the Center for Clinical Research and Prevention.
Time frame
The research project will run from August 2025 to January 2027.
