InterVitaminK study – a research project on vitamin K and cardiovascular health
The object of the InterVitaminK trial is to examine whether supplements of vitamin K can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis and hence have the potential to prevent the progression of these illnesses in the population. We will examine if a daily supplement over a period of three year will affect the development of atherosclerosis, arterial stiffness, bone mineralisation and metabolic metabolism. Furthermore, we will investigate the effects of vitamin K on the lung function.
The InterVitaminK trial will proceed over a period of three years and will include 450 participants. All participants will be randomly sampled to receive either tablets with 333µg of vitamin K (called MK7, active content) or placebo (none-active content).
Who can participate?
You can be invited to the trial if you have completed the Inter99 20-year follow-up health examination and have undergone a heart-CT scan. On the CT-scan we can evaluate if you have a degree of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries. If this is the case, you are eligible for participation in the InterVitaminK trial.
What does participation in the trial involve?
As a participant you will be asked to:
- Take a daily tablet during your three years of participation
- Partake in three health examinations (in addition to your health examination at the Inter99 20-year follow-up visit)
- Partake in an additional heart CT-scan after your three years of participation
- Answer questionnaires on your health and habits
What do the health exams involve?
The health exams involve measurements of:
- Height and weight
- Physical strength
- Blood pressure
- Blood glucose levels, cholesterol levels and vitamin K levels
- Lung function
- Arterial stiffness
The health examinations are carried out by our trained healthcare personnel and after each completed measurement you will get a verbal and written response to the examinations.
Where do the examinations take place?
The health examinations take place at the Centre for Clinical Research and Prevention located in building 85, Nordstjernevej 14, 2600 Glostrup.
The CT-scans take place at Rigshospitalet, Department of Radiology, Blegdamsvej 9, 2100 Copenhagen Ø.
