About your visit

Your child has a pulled elbow. We have set the elbow back in place. The arm may feel sore for a couple of hours.

A pulled elbow usually happens if the arm is pulled while outstretched and typically happens to children under 5 years old.

Appointments and the plan for your child’s treatment can be found in your child’s medical record.

When you get home

Give your child pain-relieving medicine, if necessary
You can give your child pain-relieving medicine if they are in pain. Pain-relieving medicine for children can be bought over the counter. Only give your child the amount of pain reliever recommended on the package.

Avoid lifting your child by their outstretched arms and swinging them
Avoid pulling and lifting your child by their outstretched arm, as this can pull the elbow again. Also, avoid boisterous games with your child such as swinging them by the arms and pillow fighting.

Notify the school or preschool
There may be an increased risk of pulling the elbow again. It is therefore a good idea to inform the school or preschool about what happened.

Dial 1813 for the medical helpline if your child’s elbow is pulled again
Your child is at risk of another pulled elbow. If this happens, dial 1813 for the medical helpline immediately so we can set the elbow again.

Check your child’s medical journal

You can ask for a copy of your child’s medical journal before you leave the hospital. You can also access your child's medical records and health data at www.minsundhedsplatform.dk and www.sundhed.dk  They are both available as apps: MinSP og MinSundhed. You will need to fill out a power of attorney at the hospital before you can gain access. Contact us if you did not fill out a power of attorney before leaving the hospital.
