​The Capital Region of Denmark and the Lundbeck Foundation are collaborating to establish a new national research centre for clinical psychiatry. The ambition is to create a world-leading research environment capable of delivering new breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of mental illness.

The centre will unite already strong research environments around a shared vision: to generate insight and pioneering knowledge into why mental disorders arise, and how they can best be prevented, detected earlier, and treated more effectively. The goal is to develop new knowledge that can be translated into improved treatment and quality of life for people living with mental illness.

The research centre will have its epicentre and physical location at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen, while research satellites will be established in all Danish regions. This national structure is intended to strengthen collaboration across the country and provide a coordinated boost to psychiatric research in Denmark.

The ambition is for the centre to put Denmark firmly on the map and position itself among the leading international research environments within psychiatry. At the same time, it will serve as a hub for attracting and developing research talent from Denmark and abroad, and for building new, strong research environments within clinical psychiatry.

In the longer term, the aim is for the centre’s research to contribute to a genuine paradigm shift in the understanding and treatment of mental illness.

Key Objectives and Ambitions of the Research Centre

• To strengthen Danish psychiatric research at the highest international level
• To identify the causes of mental illness and enhance prevention and early detection
• To develop new and more effective treatments for the benefit of patients with mental disorders
• To establish a national and international beacon for knowledge and research collaboration

The research centre will be governed by a board broadly composed of representatives from all Danish regions, as well as a representative from the Danish universities. The Lundbeck Foundation will hold a seat on the board without voting rights. The Capital Region of Denmark will hold both the chair and vice-chair positions on the board.​
