Carsten worked for five years as a programmer before studying at the university and afterwards worked as statistician/datamanager in the Ministry for Environment and in the cancer registry for the Danish Health Authority, before beginning work at the center (then named Research Center for Prevention and Health) in 2002 as section head. In addition to his role as section head he worked as a specialist for the National Clinical Quality Databases (RKKP). Carsten's primary responsibility at the Center for Clinical Research and Prevention is to ensure that work with data is done safely and competently.
