In the field of image diagnostics we work with ultrasound and MRI.
Ultrasound equipment is developing rapidly, and so are the possibilities of diagnosing musculo-skeletal diseases aided by ultrasound. With ultrasound we are able to detect both chronic and acute changes in the affected tissues. Ultrasound is an efficient tool for precise diagnosis of various conditions including pathologic synovial growth, tendon ruptures and bursitis. Aided by ultrasound, steroid injections and other local treatment can be guided exactly to the area most in need.As different aspects of ultrasound develop, our possibilities for both treatment and diagnosis will expand even further.
MRI scanning is an excellent tool for diagnosing both bone edema, erosions and inflammatory conditions of soft tissue. To a large extent we compare ultrasound and MRI scannings. We do so both to get as much information as possible about the patient’s condition, and to compare the information from the two different methods – from this we want to learn which kind of scanning is the more informative for a specific disease or situation.
At present (2010) our research projects in this area are image fusion between MRI and ultrasound 3D ultrasound for monitoring erosionscomputerized calculation of cartilage volumes in MRIwe continously work on developing protocols for scanning positions in ultrasound
